The Adani Group which is led by the global business tycoon Gautam Adani has recently signed the pact to build and operate key electricity transmission lines in Kenya. This will be done for 30 years as per the African Nation’s Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Opiyo Wandayi. Adani Energy Solutions Limited has already signed the agreement with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Ketraco) for the same. This agreement marks the beginning of a transformative initiative to finance, develop, construct, operate, and maintain key transmission lines and various substations across different parts of India.

Why Build Transmission Lines in Kenya?

During the past few years, Kenya has been facing persistent power blackouts in the country. The projects awarded to Adani are mainly aimed at upgrading the country’s transmission infrastructure. This will ensure a reliable power supply throughout the country. As a part of the infrastructure development, the Adani Group will be releasing all the funding in the form of equity and debt funds which will be repaid over 30 years. As per the project agreement, the project cost which is currently estimated at 736 million USD will be crystallised through a competitive bidding process this process will be jointly handled by Adani Energy and Ketraco. The Government of Kenya will not incur any kind of financial expenditure on the project. AESL will also ensure long-term sustainability and efficiency while carrying out the project operations. The project operations will also bring the controversies of the Adani Corruption to a halt.

Adani Projects in Kenya

As per the latest discussions, the Adani Group will develop three transmission lines and two substations in Kenya. The Adani government had also been in talks with the Kenya government to operate its main airport. However, the proposal is currently on hold. As per Wandayi, Ketraco is also currently engaged with a consortium of African-50 which is an infrastructure investment platform and Power Grid of India for building two separate transmission lines. The recent project being undertaken by the Adani Group highlights the Kenya Government’s commitment towards forming a strategic partnership that strongly aligns with the country’s development goals.
